Bikini Series Day8

May 5, 2014

Happy Cinco de Mayo!! It was a little hard to get up this morning. It’s tough when I don’t really get a chance to sleep in on the weekend. It makes me feel like I get no break.

Oh well. I got up and did my neighborhood loop. I actually walked it faster this time. I decided to jog part of the downhill parts because it was harder to slow down. That was all I needed to wake up.

I was happy that both boys were finally healthy again and could go to school. I couldn’t wait to get to the gym after I dropped them off :-) I had a killer leg day. I started with a 1mile run on the treadmill then I hit the weight room. I did a modified version of a leg workout I had done before. Took out exercises I didn’t want to do and changed the number of reps and sets on others. I focused on good form and control.
Leg Press – 15,10,8,6,6,8,10,15
(140, 160, 180, 250) – I increased weight as I lowered my reps and decreased them when I increased reps.
Leg Press Machine – 10 x 10 150lbs – For this one I made sure to get low. I could really feel this in my glutes. That 10th round was killer.
Lying Leg Curls – 10 x 5 50lbs
Glute Pushdowns – 10 x 5 94lbs – this was tough after the leg press machine.
Single Leg Seated Leg Curl to Deadlift –
15 – 10 x 5 (35, 50)
Ended with Excited for Spring Cardio on the stair master. What a sweatfest!!

I was so worn out when I was done. But I was happy. It’s that exhausted from a great workout feeling :-) I walked very slowly for the rest of the day. I had to to do some grocery shopping and it was all in slow motion. Luckily, I had enough time and got most of it done before picking up the boys from school.

I started to feel overwhelmed once the boys got home. I had dinner to prep, homework to help with, and so many things to do before we had to leave for Gio’s game. I totally forgot that I had snack duty so I feel badly that the boys didn’t get a snack tonight :-( I’ll have to make it up to them. It was another rough loss for the boys. And miserable for the parents to watch because it was sooooo cold and windy.

I was really happy that Ben decided to come home and wait for a late dinner instead of picking up fast food. Meals today were pretty good.
M1: egg whites and quinoa
M2: KindBar
M3: Pesto Pasta w/ Chk apple sausage, spinach and Brussel sprouts. I pretty much threw a bunch of leftovers together.
M4: Larabar – at the baseball game
M5: In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, I made tacos. Ben and the boys had the last of the taco shells and I had lettuce tacos. The boys really enjoyed filling their tacos with what they wanted. I put guacamole, quinoa, ground turkey, and tomatoes on mine. I did also have a few tortilla chips to finish off the guacamole. I didn’t want to throw it away.
M6: frozen grapes.
Missed my water goal by 1oz. But it’s pretty close so I’m happy. I’m trying to have at least 1 coconut water during the day as part of my water intake.

After the boys went to bed, I did my 2min plank and the Best Ab Routine circuit. This was the first time I’ve done this workout. It does get those abs burning. The scissor exercise is the hardest one for me, especially today when my legs were super tired.

My kitchen is a mess and there is still 100 things I need to do. But they will have to wait until tomorrow because I am done for today!

Bikini Series Day6-7

May 3, 2014 –

I had a very busy weekend – as usual. Saturday was a bit more hectic with the boys having games at the same time. And of course it had to start early. Basically, we got up, had breakfast and headed out the door Sat morning. We spent 4 hours on the baseball field. We went to our favorite sandwich spot – Mr. Pickles for lunch. I was so worn out when we got home. I fell asleep on the couch for a couple hours. My boys were very nice and let me sleep.
When I got up we went for a walk. Gio rode his bike while Seppe and I walk/jogged behind him. They did really well and made it all 3miles without complaining. It wore them out pretty good too. They fell asleep on their own.
Saturdays are usually my rest days but during this series I will be actively resting and going for walks and doing yoga. I did one of my favorites – Love Your Body with Yoga. I did my plank and called it a night. Even with that long nap, I had no problem falling asleep.
Meals: Not too bad. I didn’t reach my 80oz water goal but I made it to 62oz. I’m really bad about staying hydrated during he boys games because I try to avoid having to go to the bathroom. They usually only have one bathroom open and it’s not that clean :-( Meals not shown M4: tuna salad with veggie chips M5: BBQ and Brussel sprouts. The sandwich I got for lunch was Turkey/avocado with pesto, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles on whole wheat slice. This was smaller than getting it on a roll and easier for me to eat. Ben made eggs for breakfast and I take advantage of any time when I don’t have to cook :-)

20140504-233803.jpg
Sunday is when I do my long runs. I’ve cut back on my distance so I can build muscle. I did 6 miles today. I felt really good the whole way. I was able to keep a sub 8:30min/mile pace :-) It’s really rare I get close to 8:30 during training because I try not go fast and the hills slow me down. I got home, did some squats and stretched. Then, I headed to Gio’s practice. Ben went early with the boys while I did my run. He had to go to work so he left as soon as I got the baseball field.

I did a long stretch while Gio practiced. I helped to keep the boys focused when I was done. His team is very easily distracted when they need to be paying attention. Gio did better with his effort and focus today and I think that has a lot to do with him finally feeling better. Today was the first day he didn’t throw up some thing. His appetite and energy was back. I’m glad because I was starting to get a little worried. Gio is one of those kids who needs to eat more but doesn’t because he is sooo picky.

I got a lot done around the house today. Laundry, both bathrooms cleaned, dishes, and the house tidied up. I did a little meal prep. I’m out of a lot of things so I will need to go grocery shopping tomorrow. I made some quinoa for the week. I will do more meal prep tomorrow. I knocked out the Arms Playlist after the boys went to bed. I used 8lb dumbbells for most of exercises :-) I planned my workouts for the week, prepped my clothes and set my alarm.

Meals –
M1: Cliff Bar
M2: Turkey Jerky
M3: Greek Chk Salad from Panera no dressing and I didn’t have the bread that came with it :-)
M4: Larabar
M5: Pesto Pasta, turkey meatballs and roasted Brussel sprouts

All in all, this first week of the bikini series has gone pretty well. I’m getting back to doing bootycall workouts and having 5 meals a day. I survived not having a ton of chocolate and candy and I’m drinking more water. I was able to meet my plank and yoga goals. I want to continue to work on drinking more water and doing more yoga. I’m ready for week 2 :-)

Bikini Series Day5

May 2, 2014 –

Another tough morning for me. It was super hard to get up. Still having lots of congestion. I got dressed and headed out the door for a run. I went slow and enjoyed the fresh cool air. It helped me breathe. I felt better and got the boys up for school. Gio was doing better so he went back to school. Ben actually got up and decided to come with me to drop the boys off and go to the gym.

He did cardio while I hit the weight room. I did a mini leg workout:
Abductor 80lbs 10×3
Adductor 80lbs 10×3
Leg Extensions 65lbs 10×3
Seated Leg Curls 55lbs 10×3
Single Seated Leg Curls 35lbs 10×3 each leg
Leg Press Machine 175lbs 10×3
Glute Kick Back 70lbs 10×3 each leg
Squats 95lbs 10×3
Ab Machine 55lbs 10×3

Then we went back to the city to exchange the clothes that didn’t work for Ben. We had lunch and then it was time to pick up the boys. We picked up my car that we dropped off yesterday. On the way home, my car was smoking so we turned around to take it back. I took Ben’s car and took the boys home so we could get ready for Gio’s game and Seppe’s practice. We didn’t have much time and I still had to pick up drinks for Gio’s team. I somehow managed to drop them off, go to the store and be back before Gio’s game started. Ben was still at the tire place because they had to redo my entire brake installation.

We were at the baseball field for 3hrs today. I picked up Larabars for my M4. Dinner for the boys was pizza. I had half a slice that Seppe didn’t want and that was it. I came home and had some tilapia and Brussel sprouts. The rest of my meals were decent. Lunch was half of a crab salad sandwich that I shared with Ben. We usually eat a whole one each but we decided to split one today. I had veggie chip which were actual vegetables baked into chips and not just potatoes shaped/colored like veggies. I thought I took a pic of my breakfast but I guess I didn’t. M1 was egg whites and a banana. I almost made my water goal – only 5oz short.

I didn’t get a chance to do the Sunset Challenge for today. I wasn’t planning I spending most of my day doing errands and dealing with my car. By the time Gio’s game finished it was getting dark. Hoping I can do it with the boys sometime this weekend. I know they would love to join me I writing words of encouragement with chalk :-)

Soooo tired! Saturday will be a super busy morning with baseball. The boys have games at the same time :-/ And of course it starts early.

Bikini Series Day4

May 1, 2014 –

Woke up sore today. I definitely feel my workout from yesterday. My forearms are sore from last night’s volleyball game. There was one rotation where the guy had some killer serves that were painful. It was really really hard to get out of bed. I had hard time sleeping last night because I was so stuffed up.

But I got out of bed and did the Sunrise Routine for my bootycall. It was perfect. Just what I needed to help me wake up.

After dropping the Seppe off(Gio was still sick and stayed home w/ Ben) , I decided to go to the gym and do Spinning. I haven’t done a class in a while. It wears me out and I don’t have much energy to go and lift afterwards. Spinning is something I Love and Hate at the same time. It is very challenging for me. I love the sweat fest and the music. I hate turning up the resistance. Lol. But I do my best to make sure I am working hard the whole time. I did better than I thought I would. I’ll be trying to go every Thursday for the Bikini Series :-)

I went straight home and got ready to go into to city. Ben had clothes to pick up. Then we dropped off Ben’s car to get the brakes checked and tired rotated. After his car was done, we picked it up and dropped off my car.

I finally had time to the Cowabunga workout after the boys went to bed. This is a tough one. Definitely a good total body workout. I did 2 rounds. I wasn’t feeling too great and I was so congested. I did my 2min plank and called it a night.

My M1 and M2 were pretty much the same because Ben had made breakfast for me when I got home from the gym. And I was really hungry after spin. M4 was a Perfect Fit protein bar. I realized today, just how much of a drug sugar is. I wanted some chocolate or candy. But I’ve been really focusing on staying away from sweets. It’s an addiction that I know is not good for me. I’ve been turning to fruit instead of candy. It’s hard but I’m taking it one day at a time.

The Sunset Challenge for today was to reach out to our friends and let them know how amazing the are. I chose 2 of my best friends that I’ve known for a long time and a new friend. These ladies have had a positive impact on my life and I am so grateful for their friendship.

Bikini Series Day2

April 29, 2014 –

Today was tough. Gio woke up in the middle of the night sick. Cleaned up the mess and had a couple hours to get back to sleep. I didn’t want to get up when the alarm went off but I did. I wasn’t feeling that great. Went on my walk and did a loop around the neighborhood. I felt better after the walk. But Gio had a fever and had to stay home so my plan to go to spinning didn’t work out. Took care of him and Ben most of the day – Ben came home early from work because he wasn’t feeling well either :-/ Gio tried to go play his baseball game but we were glad they had enough players that he could sit out. He stayed and cheered on his team and Ben helped coach. I didn’t get a chance to workout until after the boys went to bed.

20140430-142534.jpg

I followed along with the new Bikini Body Workout. I used 8lb dumbbells for everything except the first move. I love this new workout. K&K never fail to make great workouts for the bikini series. Followed it with 30 push-ups and a 2 min plank. I ended with the Sunset Stretch yoga routine. I really need to do yoga more often. It felt so great to stretch out my legs.

I didn’t get a chance to take pics of my M2 and M4. My m2 was mango and m4: was a Luna bar. I did have a handful of m&m’s at Gio’s game though :-/ I need to pack better for his games because it’s easy to go the whole 2-3 hours without eating or drinking anything. Dinner was a Greek Chicken Salad from Panera with no dressing. I love Greek salads and with all the flavors from the olives and feta, I didn’t need dressing. I didn’t quite reach my water goal. I still got 60 oz in but I want to drink more because it helps me feel better throughout the day. Baseball game days are hard. I’m usually so tired that we just pick up dinner or order pizza for the kids. I have to start having dinner already made before the game so we can just come home and eat.

I showered and then took my before pics for the bikini series:

20140430-154242.jpg

I am always hesitant about posting my before pics. I’ve got some toning to do on my midsection. But that will come with a cleaner diet. I’m not too concerned about getting smaller. In fact, I’m trying to get bigger in my legs and arms. I wish I could make my chest grow :-( But I’ve come to accept that this is my body. I have to learn to love my body. I don’t weigh myself so I don’t have a starting weight. I did measure though because I want to put on muscle in certain areas.
Waist – 26″
Hips – 34″
Thighs – 16″
I’m looking forward to seeing the changes in 8 weeks.

Bikini Series Day1

April 28, 2014 –

Today was the first day of this year’s Bikini series :-) It was tough but I got up early and went out for a 20min walk for my bootycall. I walked around the neighborhood. There are lots of steep hills so it gets the heart pumping. It’s been a while since I’ve done a bcwo. I stopped shortly after I learned I had high blood pressure last year. I decided that I needed more rest to help my body. I cut back on my workouts and tried to not stress out as much. But I really want to give this Bikini Series my all so I am making a goal of doing a bcwo 5x a week. I will keep it to a walk or jog and I will be making a huge effort to get to bed earlier so I can make sure I am well rested.

20140428-221308.jpg

Seppe was still sick today so I stayed home with him. After dropping Gio off at school, I did a short upper body workout with my equipment at home:
Pull-Ups (Wide, Narrow, Reverse) 5×2
Band Pull-Downs (Wide, Narrow) 10×2
Upright Row to Deadlift 10, 8, 6 with 15lb DB

I went to the gym after Ben got home from work and did a short leg workout and the new Spring into Summer cardio. I started with a 1mile warmup on the treadmill. Then hit the weight room:
Leg Extensions 65lbs 10×3 Plus a 4th round was a drop set that I started at 75lbs down to 25lbs. I did at least 6reps at each weight.
Deadlift 80lbs 10×3
Leg Press Machine 175lbs 10×3
Seated Leg Curl 55lbs 10×3
I wanted to hit the squat rack but it was taken and I ran out of time.

I did the Spring Into Cardio routine on the stairmill. Wow! What a sweat session!! The stairmaster is probably least favorite cardio machine and is tough for me but it’s so great for the legs!

Did the 3 Moves for Sexy Upper Back 10 x 3, Day28 of 30pushups for 30daya, and 2min plank after putting the boys to bed.

20140428-221649.jpg

Meals were pretty good today. I didn’t have a single piece of candy :-) Lunch was my not so great meal. Ben brought home some L&L. Usually it’s really good but today it wasn’t that great. My favorite meal was dinner with Panko Tilapia, broccoli and roasted Brussel sprouts. I also has some frozen grapes after dinner. I also made my water goal today.

I felt pretty good most of the day. Got a little tired after my morning workout. Took a nap with Seppe on the couch. He started to feel better today and his happy personality is starting to come back. I miss him smiling and being goofy. Glad this was a short sickness even though it was pretty rough for him – and me.

Made my Vision Board for the Sunset Challenge:

20140428-223526.jpg

The 3 Things I really to Accomplish at the end of 8 weeks:
1. Making Clean, Lean and Green my Lifestyle again
2. Become better at swimming
3. Lift heavier weights

I set out my clothes for tomorrow last night so I’m ready for Day2 :-) Time to get to bed!

2104 Bikini Series #CreateYourSummer

I’ve been horrible about my resolution to blog more :-( So I’ve decided to use this year’s Tone It Up’s Bikini Series to get me writing again. I always get motivated/inspired during the Bikini Series.

Part of my problem was that I didn’t know what to write. I’d have so many ideas but I could never decide which one to write about. With the Bikini Series, I’ll have a focus for my posts. I will be posting my workouts, meals, and how my day went during the week and on Sunday.

The first challenge for the series was to “Create Your Summer” – a list of what would make this My Perfect Summer. This was fun to do because it allowed to me day dream about how awesome this summer is going to be. I have so much to look forward to:

20140427-155259.jpg

The highlight of my summer is going to be the TIU Retreat! When K&K first mentioned it last year, I was soooo excited. I was determined to go. I waited in front of my computer all day during registration to make sure I would be able to get in. There are no words to truly describe how excited I was when I was able to register! A weekend with my trainers and fellow TIU sisters working out, hanging on the beach, and dancing at night – I honestly can’t think of a more perfect vacation! I plan on playing lots of beach volleyball, paddle boarding, soaking up the sun, beach runs and everything that will be going on at the retreat. Thinking about it just makes so happy :-)

In preparation for all the fun, I will be working on my swimming at the pool and hoping to do paddle boarding with my sis or Ben. I’ll also be training to PR for my half in October. I’ve cut back on my running but training will start back up in July.

Of course, my summer wouldn’t be perfect if I didn’t spend time with my family. We won’t be doing a big vacation this year so I want to do lots of fun things locally. Camping at our family camp grounds is something we all love. I want to take the boys to the Santa Cruz boardwalk and to amusement parks to ride roller coasters. We’ll be working around Gio’s summer baseball schedule but we should have plenty of time to enjoy their long break.

Part of Creating My Summer was to also write down my goals for the Bikini Series:
This year, I really want to focus on getting back to my healthy eating habits. I’ve been good about working out but slacked on keeping things clean, lean and green the past couple months. I’ve had a bit too much chocolate and sweets so I need to get back on track. I want to feel confident, healthy and strong for the TIU Retreat. My biggest challenge will be adjusting to having the boys home but I’ll be adding them to my gym membership so I’ll have no excuses to get my workouts in. My goal is to weight train 3-4x a week, yoga/stretch 3x a week, and to run 3-4x a week. I want to try out Zumba since I’ve always been hesitant to. Of course, I’ll be following the TIU workout schedule. I’ll be doing a 2min plank every night and drinking 80-100 oz of water daily.

Another part of the challenge was to journal 5 Things that I’ve Successfully Accomplished over the last 3 months:
1. Finishing the SF Rock N Roll Half Marathon
2. Lifting weights consistently for 2 months
3. Tried out Spinning
4. Volunteering in my son’s class every week
5. Getting Ben to come to the gym with me 3x a week

I’m really proud of Ben. The last few weeks, he’s been going to the gym consistently. He does cardio and lifts weights. I’ve been doing my lifting and then picking him up and doing cardio while he does his workout. I hope he will keep it up.

Tonight I’ll be planning workouts and meals. I will be logging workouts on my calendar. My plan is to blog my day at night before bed. Fingers crossed I can stick to it. I will also post on Instagram and Twitter : @msmammamia.

Looking forward to the Bikini Series and to an amazing Summer :-)

Let’s try this again

So my 2013 resolution/goal to blog more was an epic fail. There just never seemed to be enough time. I gave myself so much to do but I didn’t make time for my blog. 2013 was a bit of a blur. It seems like every year, time flies faster… if that’s even possible?

I was so focused on my running goals that I worked everything around it. It was frustrating for me because races became a hassle when they use to be fun. Ben works weekends, so I had to find a sitter or rush back as soon as I was finished.  Most of the races, I did by myself.  It seemed like a big inconvenience for everyone around me. And yes, that made me angry and dig my heels in more. But the harder I pushed myself, the further I got from my goals.  My life was definitely unbalanced.

And of course, there are the boys.  Their schedules for school and sports kept me busy. I was pretty much at their old school every day. At every game, I was doing something. I spread myself thin, so there was little time for me to just sit and write(type). I was lucky if I could get to bed by midnight most nights, and I was up at 6a the next day.

I was ready for the year to end by September but I had races lined up through November.  I backed off on the running and clean eating, having fast food more often than I would have liked. It was just easier. I was tired of planning, prepping and cooking meals. I was tired of not having a break from anything.

Now that 2014 has begun, I wanted to get back to my goal of giving my blog more attention.  So here I am making an effort to do this at least once a week.  What do I have planned for 2104? I’m making it a “Less is More” year. Yes, I am still running but only 3-4 times a week and I only want to do 2 halfs this year. I want to do two that I haven’t done before. The Rock N Roll Las Vegas one is looking like a real possibility.  I’ve backed off volunteering at the boys’ new school. I still help out when I can, but I’m not at the school every day all day.

What I’d really like to do this year, is help others to reach their fitness goals. I’m not quite sure how I’ll go about it. I don’t want to charge people. I just want to offer my tips, advice, and support to those who might be having a hard time. I’d like to be that person who is cheering them on and pushing them along the way.  I guess it’s all a bit intimidating with all these big companies who offer these great products with great results. But I guess, I’d want to show people that they can reach their goals without having to buy any special product or service.  You have everything you need to get started. With hard work and determination, you can have great results. Well that’s my dream for 2014 and I guess I won’t know until I go for it.

My 2012 Recap

Now that 2013 is here,  I wanted to take a look back on 2012.  It was an amazing year! So much happened. I definitely learned a lot about myself this past year. And it went by so fast!

We had a lot of family fun this year:

Camping at Hatcreek – This is a special place for our family and I Love that I can share this wonderful place with my boys. I’m also very grateful that they got to spend time with their great grandpa who has had such a big influence on the person I am today.

I had so much fun in 2012. It’s been the happiest and healthiest so far.   And I can’t wait for More in 2013!

Last Race of 2012

The last race I did for 2012 was the Run to Feed the Hungry 5K on Thanksgiving.  I did it last year with Ben and this year, the boys wanted to do it too. I was hesitant to sign them up for it because I didn’t think that they could make it the whole 3.1 miles – especially Seppe. Ben wasn’t going to do it because he hadn’t trained for it like he did last year but said that he would walk with the boys. So I signed us all up :-) Ben’s dad even joined us on race day.

I did not train too much for the race. I stuck to my regular routine for the most part. I ran 3-4 times a week with one long run. My main goal was to beat last year’s time.  I wasn’t confident that I would because my practice runs weren’t showing much improvement from last year at all.

Clothes and Gear ready.

Being away from home made it a challenge to prep.  I got up and got dressed while Ben and the boys were still asleep. My breakfast was a Luna bar and a banana. Once I was ready, I got the boys up and got them ready.  Ben was the last one up, but we still made it to the race an hour before it started.  After picking up our race bibs, we took a family photo in front of the turkeys. Then we went over to the campus cafe that we found last year to stay warm while we waited for the race to start.

Race started at 8:45a. I headed to the front while Ben and the boys stayed at the 10min mile marker. It was the same course as last years, but this time the weather was a lot nicer.  I was cold but still wore shorts. Felt great to run in with sun shining bright. I did manage to beat last year’s time :-)

I waited at the finish line for the boys.  Gio ran with his grandpa – half run/half walked and finished just under an hour.  Ben walked with Seppe and finished just a little over an hour. Gio enjoyed the race and couldn’t wait to run again. Seppe didn’t enjoy it as much. He got upset that he couldn’t keep up with his brother and grandpa. We thought that he had sprained his ankle because he was limping after the race. It turns out that he got a blister on his big toe and it wound up getting infected :-(

Seppe trying to be happy.

This year they didn’t have bags for us so we had to carry all the post race goodies in our hands.  The boys were pretty worn out so we headed back home. We showered and got ready to celebrate Thanksgiving with my family.

I was really glad that we did the race as a family. I am very proud of my boys. I think that with a little training, Gio could do another 5k.  For Seppe, I will have to keep him to the shorter distances so that he doesn’t get too discouraged. Gio and I will be doing this race again next year :-) I know it won’t be too much longer before he will be passing me up.
